Over the last few months we’ve been gathering data from the major social news and bookmark sites and looking at the type of stories that reach the popular pages on these sites. After much cursing and many finger cramps, we now have collected enough data to analyse monthly changes in popular topics. The results might not be what you expected.

There has been some great analysis of StumbleUpon top users and of the StumbleUpon algorithm, but there has been little examination of the relationship between StumbleUpon users and their friends. After coming across interesting complex data visualization tools we wanted to visualize the stumblesphere of top users.

So what was the most popular type of content on social news and social bookmark sites this January? You can see last months stats here and this month we have included analysis of another two sites, Mixx and Shoutwire.
We analysed approximately 500 front-page stories for Digg, Reddit, Propeller, StumbleUpon and Del.icio.us and Mixx to see what types of content were the most popular in January 2008 (500 stories for each site, not in total).
